    FAQ

    General Questions
    • What is unlocking?
      • Unlocking your iPhone allows it to work on any GSM network besides its original carrier. In the U.S. unlocking allows the iPhone to function on T-Mobile's network. The iPhone must be jailbroken in order to be unlocked.
    • Which iPhone model should I get?
      • At the very least get the 3G iPhone, it has a GPS chip and bluetooth connectivity with other iPhones.
    • Here is a list of what all iPhone termininology mean.

    Jailbreaking Questions
    • What is jailbreaking?
      • The basic definition of jailbreaking is to enable your device to do things otherwise prohibited. This may include making aesthetic changes like custom themes, adding non-factory functionality, or installing applications developed by third-parties. You can also install and run cracked (pirated) applications and tether your iPhone. Here is an excellent collection of modifications possible when jailbreaking. And 15 other reasons.
    • What is the difference between jailbroken and cracked (pirated) applications?
      • Jailbroken apps are those developed by third-parties and available on the store known as Cydia which is an app installed during jailbreaking. They can be released free or at a price. Cracked apps are those found from the official iTunes appstore and are downloaded from various sources and can be installed on jailbroken devices.
    • Will jailbreaking void my factory warranty?
      • It does not void your warranty as long as you restore the firmware.
    • Is it safe? Will I mess up?
      • The jailbreaking process is completely software automated. It's not an intimidating process if you follow the procedures and watching the video tutorials should alleviate concerns.
    • Apple already has its own iTunes App Store...what good will jailbreaking do for me?
      • Every legit app in the iTunes store has been cracked. You can therefore download cracked apps to try them or for other purposes.
    • I have already purchased apps from the iTunes appstore. Will I still be able to use my purchased apps after jailbreaking?
      • Yes. A caveat is that if you like an application that needs to "signal home" by connecting to its servers, you should not install a cracked version because the developer may blacklist your device.
    • Will I still be able to sync my music, videos, media, calendar, etc through iTunes?
      • Yes, jailbreaking does not alter the way your device syncs with iTunes.
    • Will jailbreaking cause my phone to lag or become buggy?
      • It depends on what you do. You can actually improve performance by installing SBSettings which allows you to free memory and kill background processes. Most concerns of lagging or bugginess can be attributed to installation of jailbroken applications that are active in the background and custom themes such as "Winterboard" and scripts that run "animated wallpapers" particularly on 2G and 3G iPhone devices which have slower processors and less system RAM.
    • If I don't like my phone after jailbreaking can I undo it?
      • Yes all you need to do is perform a firmware restore.
    • What is the difference between a [firmware] restore and "Restore from Backup"?
    • After my device is jailbroken, if I backup my phone using iTunes, is that going to overwrite my current legit backup? Is there a way to save my current backup?
    • What is the current state of jailbreaking?

How-To Install Cracked Apps for Firmware 3.x/4.0
Source: Installing ipa on the iPhone, Step by Step Guide
    Thread Search String Tags: Tutorialz

Based on trial and error I believe this is the the easiest and most complete method allowing you to install apps directly from your iPhone and/or by syncing apps from your computer using iTunes.

    Note:
    • READ THIS TUTORIAL FROM TOP-TO-BOTTOM! and perform everything from top-to-bottom order.
    • The directions below are hand-picked and modified slightly from the source.
    • iTunes backup feature does NOT backup applications (legit, jailbroken, or cracked). Thus, for jailbreakers the wired installation method is preferred since you retain the IPA file locally on the hard drive.

    Requirements

    * A jailbroken iPhone 2G/3G/3GS or iPod Touch 1G or 2G running OS 3.x or 4.x
    * Cydia (Automatically installed in jailbreaking process)
    * Internet connection (Faster is better!)
    * A PC or MAC
    * An iTunes Account (Create one with no credit card here)

    Before you begin

First off all you must download and install at least one application from the iTunes AppStore (Free or Paid). This process is required in order to install cracked apps. Create an iTunes account with no credit card here

    1. Open iTunes and login to your account
    2. Go to AppStore
    3. Select an application then Click “Get App”
    4. Enter you iTunes account info (User name & Password)
    5. Sync your iPhone with iTunes to install the App

Install apps from your computer (Wired Preferred Method):
    1. Open Cydia
    2. Add this source: http://cydia.hackulo.us (Detailed instructions here)
    3. Still in Cydia, go into the Hackulo.us source you added and install
    • For Firmware 4.0 download: AppSync for OS 4.0
    • For Firmware 3.1.2 download: AppSync for Firmware 3.1
    • For Firmware 3.0 download: AppSync for Firmware 3.0
    • Use Cydia's search feature and search "AppSync" if needed

    *4. Restart iPhone
    5. Connect iPhone to your PC/Mac by USB-Cable
    6. Copy cracked ipa files into your iTunes Library (just drag and drop to the iTunes Window or double-click) (apptrackr and xSellize have lots of cracked ipas)
    7. Tell iTunes to install applications that you want
    8. Start Syncing iPhone!

*Once step 4 has been completed, all preceding steps need not be repeated again.
Install apps directly on your device without computer access (OTA wireless)
If you prefer to install apps directly from the phone without computer then now follow these steps, AFTER the above steps have been completed:
Using Installous (stand alone) (iPhone interface of web-based apptrackr)

    1. Open Cydia, add this source: http://cydia.hackulo.us
    2. Still in Cydia, install “Installous 3.1.12″
    3. Quit Cydia
    *4. Reboot iPhone
    5. Open Installous
    6. Select browse tab!
    7. Navigate to home Screen by pressing home!
    8. Download the ipa file
    9. Go to Downloads tab
    10. Tap on the ipa file then select INSTALL!

*Once step 4 has been completed, all preceding steps need not be repeated again.

How to Install iPhone Flash Plugin for Safari Browser
    Source: Code Retard (Pictures included)

Note: This plugin is not compatible for Firmware 3.0. I'll keep tabs if there are updated plugins.

One long time criticism of iPhone’s mobile Safari web browser is the lack of an iPhone Flash plugin that enables Flash-based video playback and Flash-based effects. Though the Safari web browsing experience on the Apple iPhone is undoubtedly the best on a mobile phone, the lack of Flash support kills the joy about. But instead of waiting for Apple to figure something out, which they haven’t yet even as of the latest firmware version 2.2, you can actually do something about it yourself now. Enter the iMobileCinema iPhone Flash plugin for Safari. Using the steps below to install this plugin, you’ll soon be able to enjoy all browsing all the Flash enhanced sites you weren’t able to browse before.

    1. If you haven’t already, jailbreak your iPhone or iPod Touch. We have guides for 2G and 3G iPhones.
    2. Start up Cydia.
    3. Browse to the manage tab on the bottom menu bar.
    4. Click on the Manage tab on the bottom menu bar. In the Manage tab, click on the Sources button in the middle. You will need to add the source to the iMobileCinema repo to install the Safari Flash plugin.
    cydia_sources
    5. Click on "Edit" on the top right, then "Add" on the top left. In the URL, type: http://d.imobilecinema.com/ as shown below. When you are done click "Done" and then "Browser."
    cydia_repo_imobilecinema
    6. Now click on the "Search" tab and type "imobilecinema" and install the app "iMobileCinema."
    cydia_search_imobilecinema
    cydia_imobilecinema
    7. Now exit Cydia after the installation completes and fire up Safari. Head on over to a website like video.google.com and test it out. Note that iMobileCinema is still in beta so kinks are still being worked out as we speak.

This is already a great thread! Thanks! Hopefully I'll be able to contribute as well, as a new iPod Touch owner.

definately like this thread and subscribing

i own a first generation ipod touch, and recently upgraded it to v2.2 on the software

i had jailbroken it before when it was v 1.1 but i decided to upgrade to the 2.2 just so i can get all of the cool free apps and not be constantly bugged by itunes to upgrade every time a new version came out

im really happy with what apple has done with the newest version and by far my favorite apps have to be facebook (lol), remote (which is awesome, i can keep my computer upstairs during parties and not have to use that to change songs and worry about damage being done) and this handy one i picked up called road trip lite. you enter in the amount of gas you put in your car and the odometer reading as well as the price of gas and it keeps a nifty little log of information for you. such as avg gas price, and avg mpg (or mpl for canadians deatha) and helps me keep track of my gas purchases

If you have seen this tutorials somewhere and think its not my own its probably because its from my iPhone 3G support site or someone copied and pasted the entire thing from there somewhere else.

Note: This was copied and pasted from my site so they are not addressed to EF. Also this method has been outdated by other applications but they come and go frequently and so thats why I will not update this method as it will always work with 2.0-2.2

Warning: Tethering with the iPhone is against AT&T’s policy and you can be charged or even have your account terminated.

If it makes you feel better, I tethered many times with my Blackjack and I never was caught but hey I am not telling you to do this. During this demonstration I will be showing how to do this using Firefox and a Macbook Pro.

    1. Jailbreak your iPhone

    2. After you jailbreak your iPhone, you will notice an application called Cydia. Open it and let it load and then search for 3proxy and download it. After search for terminal and choose any iPhone terminal that is working for you. Once both are downloaded click the home button and your iPhone will restart. From there you will see a terminal icon but no 3proxy.

    3. On your laptop create an adhock network. For myself I go to airport, create network, and I am to name it. Once it has been created then join it on your iPhone.

    4. Now go to Wifi and click the blue arrow next to your adhock network and write down the IP address. You will need this later.

    5. Now go home, and open your terminal and run the socks. To do this open terminal and type “socks” and then return. Nothing will appear beneath what you have written but it is running. You need to remember to go back to terminal and hold down home button for awhile to shut down socks.

    6. Now we need to open a page in safari so go to safari and go to www.iphone-3g-forums.com/blog. This will take awhile and you will notice your phone going back and forth between 3G and wifi. The iPhone will internaly switch from adhock to 3G as it notices the adhock is not getting service. Thank you 3proxy!

    7. Now its time to configure firefox to work! Go to preferences>advanced>networks>settings. There enter in the IP address which you wrote down before in SOCKS host feild. For port make it 1080 and make sure all the other ports are 0 and other feilds are blank. Make sure you entered the information right and go to your url browser and enter “about:config”. In the filter type in socks and about 4 things will come up one being network.proxy.socks_remote_dns. Double click on it to make the value true and your good!

So I'm getting an iPhone and I'm curious...do you guys think that I should jailbreak it or not? I mean, is it worth it? The only thing I want to use that I can't really get otherwise is the ability to tether it to my laptop for car usage as I drive a 120 mile commute daily. Anyone got any ideas on what they think I should do? Holla at ur boiii. Haha.

I jailbroke for awhile, but with the app store I don't really have any reason to. I just find it slows my phone down, and seems much more apt to crash. I found most of the apps weren't that great and you can find much better things in the app store. And I'm not really one for changing the picture in my background or using some ugly theme instead of the apple one.

It already sounds like you don't plan on using your iPhone more then whatever it is then you do now. But jailbreaking will allow you to run pirated apps and customize the theme and appearances. AT&T is rumored to create a $10 tethering plan/month for the iPhone. Here are more reasons to jailbreak.

Using Winterboard, to change the theme, is what slows the phone down as it runs in the background. Installing apps do not hinder performance. As for the app store thing, the selection of jailbroken apps is quite numerous, in fact, you can find every single legit app in the iTunes store pirated.

Go to appulo.us and take a look for yourself.

Just got my 3g IPhone over the weekend.... and this laptop and internet again.. thank god E.F. kept my account.

I want to jail break mine and this thread is a huge help! Thanks!!!

    I mention jailbreaking to the att&t . . . . . . "slick salesman" and he recomended

Quickpwn 2.2 But warned me not to change the apple to a pineapple as that will tell tech support that the phone is jailbroken and also not to unlock it to use over seas.

and to get Audiko.com or use it. He was not very clear, I mention im not willing to pay for ring tones that suck, I could do better myself.

Is there a good list of apps. including links to get them out there... Just got back online after a year without and am completly in the dark on .. . well everything for current tech.

Ignore my question of list of apps and link... I r dumb... it's in the main postings here.
