New 1.3 update just came out. I manually updated my girlfriend's nook and this update is sick as fuck. The menus are much faster, and they added games and a full webbrowser!

You scroll around with the touch screen, or you can pan around with the buttons on the sides of the nook. It's still in beta but works surprisingly well. Can load up most websites pretty quickly and they look great. Obviously the e-ink screen is only black and white, and it's a little slow to refresh, but it works great.

They're really making the nook better and better with each update.

New Nook Color being announced on Tuesday. A picture leaked of it

I think it looks pretty awesome, love the color and design. I just hope it uses some sort of color e-ink instead of a normal lcd screen.

Seems pretty cool. I'm disappointed about having an LCD screen, but I guess the screen is really nice. And there is an antiglare layer on it, not sure how well it works. But for $250, I think it's a pretty good deal. Especially with the web browser, and other apps and games.

They have Pandora and QuickOffice to edit documents right now, but there is now a developer program for people to develop and sell apps for it. It's basically like a mini tablet. There is also a facebook and twitter app built in as well.

give me the black and white e-ink one any day. thats the point of an e reader, to mimic paper... if i wanted to read e-books off an lcd screen i could use my laptop..

I disagree. I own an iPad and a NOOK and I probably split my e-reading time between both of them pretty evenly. When light is semi low, the iPad is a million times better reading on. And in the sun, the NOOK is better. So I can see the point in both until we can get a solution like the Pixel Qi. And depending on how good the anti-glare is on the NOOKcolor, it may be able to work in even more situations.

And trying to read a book on a laptop and reading them on a 7" tablet is completely different.

Also the color is really going to be great for magazines. I love my Nook for books but would never view a magazine on it. But the Nook colo I'd be all over for magazines.

never considered buying a nook because it was only black&white, but i would consider buying this because of magazines.

yeah but how good can magazines really look on a 7" screen?

also, has anyone else noticed the e-book prices seem to keep going up in price? I was thinking about getting an e-reader to save some money in the long term, but now the e-books are only like $1-2 cheaper than the actual printed ones.

I get all my e-books for free from the internet...

There's even a spot in the File/Req forum for books!

    Nook update 1.5 is out.
Barnes and Noble's just made version 1.5 of its Nook e-reader's firmware available. What can Nook owners expect from this latest upgrade? Well, the company says it boasts improved page refresh rates about 50 percent faster than the previous version -- which is good news as we found it to be slower than its competitors. The update -- which is available for both the 3G and WiFi versions -- is also Barnes and Noble's largest to date for the readers, and includes other fixes such as syncing across devices like the Nook's various apps (finally!), customizable folders for your library, password protection options, improved search functions and battery performance. That sure does sound like a big update to us, so go get it if you're a Nook user! Full press release is below.

Also, I went and checked out the nookColor at BN the other day and I have to say I'm very impressed. The hardware feels amazing and the screen looked great. I may end up getting one to compliment my nook even though I have an iPad. The size of the nookColor just makes it better to read on than my iPad. And I do about half of my reading on my iPad and half on my nook.

Nook Color has been rooted. Incoming full Android ROMs

Not a bad deal, $250 for a full Android tablet.

i've never been a big reader, but the nook color being able to do magazines and the fact its been rooted makes it a pretty sweet device that i have been going back and forth on picking up.
