    How do you start something that big? Get behind it and push, then just pop the clutch.

    Yeah, lets call 40 people to start the push... Oh god, imagine being on a signal light at an elevation! Bumper sticker will read, "Please keep a good 200 Yard distance between yourself and my rear bumper."

    Compressed air;

    large (especially 2 stroke diesels) are started by first starting smaller engines to run compressors to build up pressure in a VERY large air tank. Then when you have enough PSI you dump the air into "SOME" of the cylinders to get things moving, then the others fire up... After you have enough of the cylinders firing you switch the compressed air off and feed normal ambient air into the starting cylinders.

    They are often called "pony motors"

    The engines you start to start bigger engines.

    Thats what our 1972 d3 Cat has.... but we normally just chain it and pull start it.

    It most likely uses some sort of ocean water circulation as a cooling system similar to some smaller boats.
