    Rep Your City

Didn’t know if I should put in cooking or here. But it seems more fitting on this page, although this place is little dead.
Point of this thread is state your city or state and name couple of things you have to see when you are there, or you have to eat.
I got a job traveling across most of country for next couple of years and would love to try some destinations out.
    Example:
    Santa Ana

    Vancouver -

Budgie's Burritos on Kingsway & Main St. - All vegan but they've been around for years and have perfected burritos made with garlic roasted potatoes or chipotle marinated tofu. They make burritos with whole wheat tortillas, fresh black beans, long grain brown rice, house made chipotle sour cream and various house made salsas. They also do tacos the way tacos are meant to be done, by frying a folded tortilla on the spot to make a shell. Best part is it's cheap, $6 for a 10" burrito and $7.50 for a 12". For quality hand made food with good ingredients in Vancouver that is a fair price.

Steveston Pizza Co. - An insanely long drive (1.5 hours) from Vancouver but totally worth it. The guy who runs this is a crazy ex-war iranian poet who pours his heart into pizzas making wild creations like pizzas with duck confit and red wine reduction tomato sauce, bison & enoki mushroom, snow crab, etc... he uses ALL fresh ingredients and buys all the stuff himself. The best pizza I've ever tasted by miles, it's in a league of it's own

Moby Dicks - Fish & chips place in White Rock right along the beach. British family runs it and has a special beer batter recipe and the fish they use is incredible. They claim it's cod but pieces sometimes run 2 1/2" - 3" thick, and they taste way better than halibut. The chips are worth it alone as well.

Fish House - Right in Stanley Park, the best fish in chips in the city although it's a bit more of a gourmet venue and pricier than the above place. $20+ for 2 pieces & sides. The chef who does them created this recipe where she uses a dark flour with dark beer batter recipe and she deep fries them in layers. So she puts them in then takes them out and rolls them in crushed potato chips and more batter and refries, repeats a few times and the result is a 7 layer fish and chips that orgasms in your mouth. A must visit for any fish and chip fanatic.

Guu on Garlic One of three 'Guu' japanese restaurants. This one is on Robson St. They are authentic Japanese to the bone hiring nothing but Japanese people and the people who handle the food are only Japanese males, no females. They do various sashimi creations and have an extensive menu of other Japanese delicacies. They also do these incredible drinks using premium vodkas and gins, with club soda and various pieces of fresh frozen fruit as ice in measured combinations. Hard to explain the drinks but they are crazy. This place is the best sushi place in town before you get into mega $$$$ which is the place I'll list below:

Tojo's - On West Broadway, about 6 blocks east of Granville. The man who owns this is a world famous sushi chef who is flown all over the world to train sushi chefs. You can expect to pay a minimum of $80 a person here, but usually it will run $300-$500 per person or more. They have single pieces of sushi they sell for $80, so depending on how rich and hungry you are the sky's the limit. They have things you'll never find anywhere like fresh monkfish liver, which practically glows orange because of the insane amount of beta-carotene in it. An unbelievable place but beware it is for the rich.

    Hy's Steakhouse - http://www.hyssteakhouse.com/
Best steak in Vancouver hands down. Not so well known, but if you are here to visit and can't cook your own steak - this is the place to go.

I'll touch up the list later with some websites and locations, and there's a few more to add as well. Good idea for a thread, lets hope people fill it up.

    Lafayette Coney Island
    118 W Lafayette Blvd
    Detroit, MI 48226

Right in the heart of the city, the best Coney Island around. Don't be fooled by the American Coney Island right next door, as the corner of the building, Lafayette is very small and right next to it. You can also enter it from either side of the building. Be sure to bring cash though, they don't accept credit cards!

Great food in a dirty city.

Oh shoot, my bad, I forgot that Coney Islands are not necessarily national.

Coney dogs, loose hamburgers and chili dogs are some examples.

A coney dog is a hot dog topped with an all-meat chili, diced onions and mustard.

A loose hamburger, and my personal favorite, is hamburger meat piled into a hot dog bun topped with diced onions and mustard.

French fries are also served at Lafayette and I highly recommend treating yourself to a side of them with whatever meal you get.

There are other Coney Islands located around Michigan that serve many other meals (salads, sandwiches, etc.) along with the coney meals, but Lafayette is plain and simple and has been around for quite some time.

    New York City.

    Max Brenner - http://www.maxbrenner.com/
Amazing Chocolate Cafe place..all kinds of different hot chocolate drinks, food with chocolate, Fondue, Chocolate marshmallow pizza, all made with fresh chocolate the place is AMAZING. They also have regular foods like burgers and sandwiches but really you go there for the chocolate.

    Ferraras Cafe - http://www.ferraracafe.com/home.php
Italian Pastries...seriously hands down best Cannoli's you'll ever have. Also have really good Coffee, Latte's and mocha's.

I could go on an on there are a lot of amazing places to eat while in NY but if you want my opinion you have to try those two places!

    If we're talking actual hometown,

Wilmington, MA... the best calzone I've ever is from Peter's. Buffalo Chicken or Chicken Parm is the way to go. It's a generic "town name" house of pizza kinda place, but the calzones are the best you'll get without going to a really high end restaurant or paying way too much.

However, nobody is probably going to travel to the suburbs, so if you're ever in Boston go to Mike's Pastry in the North End. Pretty much everyone knows of it in Boston and it's almost a landmark at this point, but it's really good and worth stopping by for dessert.

For Nightlife, Umbria Prime is the place to go. Our group of friends has gone so often we know the promoters, so pm me or Ollis0n if you're ever in Boston and looking to check it out.

Some of the best high class Chinese food can be found here:
-South Sea Seafood Village (San Francisco) has amazing dim sum.

    -The Kitchen (Milbrae) great seafood

-Fook Yuen (Milbrae) the best hong kong style food I've ever had. I heard they're closed though. Not sure if they will re-open.

-ABC Seafood (Foster City) Very good Cantonese style food.

    Here are some cheaper places:
-Hunan Home's Restaurant (Palo Alto) Great, affordable Hunan (spicy) food.

-New Tung Kee Noodle-- cheap and large bowl of noodles with a great soup base. Make sure it's New Tung Kee though. The original Tung Kee stores aren't as good.

-King Egg Roll (San Jose) Best egg rolls ever.

    Restaurant welcomes messy eaters.

While it is not prohibited to use a fork with your food, it is typically frowned upon.

-fried chicken at it's finest. definitely one of the culinary landmarks in charlotte along with merts, you can expect a line but it moves fast. food/price are great unless you expect to eat healthy. bring cash.

    Philadelphia (God, this is easy)

a real Philly Cheesesteak Pats, Genos, Tonys, Steves - it really doesn't matter. They ALL make good steaks, even 90% of the little sandwich shops make a better steak than you'll find anywhere in the country.

Tastycakes - Pick em up from a Wawa (yeah buddy, it's a non-ghetto version of a 7-11...), or any local place they sell snacks. Gas stations, supermarket, wherever. Think Twinkies, but in like, 200 more varieties and fucking HELL of a lot tastier.

Soft Pretzels - and it only counts if you've bought 'em off the street. Corner vendors with grubby hands and racks of soft pretzels bathed in exhaust fumes. $1 for 4. Delicious.

Yuengling - Until the last 5 years or so, you could only get it in PA/NJ/DE, but it's expanded elsewhere along the east coast, now. It's brewed in PA, and it used to be one of the "cheap" beers (think Rolling Rock, etc) but now it's sort of gained a cult status everywhere else. Weird as hell, but whatever. It's fucking delicious.

Erté - Northeast mpls - Awesome little steak house that serves steak, seafood, duck, haha...I had to throw that in there. They have more, i guess not exotic? type choices.. I dont know how to explain it. Duck, Octopus, Walleye every day... I used to live a block away and we stumbled upon it just walking by. Kind of awkward wearing jeans and hoodies when the whole place is mirrors and candles, but it was definately my favorite resaurant for a while.
Seven - Downtown - Steakhouse and Sushi bar. More expensive but definately worth it.

    Milwaukee
    shit. good luck.
