    The Official Android Thread

There are a bunch of threads on phones and stuff, but nothing for generic Android.

Here is some awesome news from engadget:

While Adobe evangelist Ryan Stewart wants us to focus on Flash 10.1 performance -- admittedly impressive -- running on his Nexus One, we can't help but be distracted by the Android 2.2 "Froyo" build apparently supporting his device. Can you blame us? It's not like we're alone with waning interest in Flash, especially for video playback. Anyway, from the looks of the homescreen in the grab above, we'll be treated to an updated launcher, Android tutorial, and global search box when the OS is revealed (presumably) at Google I/O starting May 19. And with the giant Froyo statue apparently already delivered to the GooglePlex's confectionary art show, well, the stage is set for 2.2 to be launched in time for Adobe's planned June release of Flash 10.1. Get your glimpse into the future of Flash and Android in the video after the break.

Update: How much faster is a Nexus One running Froyo? 450 percent faster, according to the Android Police. They claim to have a device running the as-yet-unreleased firmware that can perform over 37 million floating-point operations per second in the Linpack benchmark... compared to about 7 megaflops without. Oh yeeaaah.

Hmmm. I haven't received it yet. Even checked my phone and it told me my system is up to date. Hopefully I'll be receiving OTA soon

Good news, looks like a wipe isn't required for your Eris owners! And now...

How to preform a manual update to 2.1

To manually install Android 2.1 on the Verizon Droid Eris, perform the following steps:

Download the official Android 2.1 firmware for the Eris from: Android 2.1 (2.36.605.1)
Copy the file to your microSD card and name it update.zip (newb warning: not update.zip.zip)
Power off your phone. Hold down the VOLUME DOWN button and power it back on.
The phone will now search for files like PB00IMG.zip, etc. This is normal. Scroll down to recovery and press the POWER button.
When you see the “/!\” symbol, press the POWER button and the HOME button at the same time. You should be presented with a menu and one of the options should be “Apply sdcard:update.zip”.
Use the trackball to navigate to “apply sdcard:update.zip” and select it.
When you see “Install from sdcard complete”, select “reboot system now”.
Users who have flashed the upgrade reported it takes about 15 minutes from start to finish.

T-Mobile has the crappiest Android phones. I'm stuck with the G1... is there going to be a 2.1 phone for T-Mobile any time soon?

Google has just closed their online store, so you should start seeing it in the T-Mobile stores soon.

Cyanogen Mod will be coming out 2.1 shortly. You can download the test version which is stable, and quick, but may still have a few bugs. You'll need to flash your SPL for your G1 though. Its a pretty easy process as long as you can follow directions.

I'm running it on my G1 and its great.

I'm rooted and running Donut. Is 2.1 the only OS that runs those cool wallpapers?

Ya 2.1 is the start of Live Wallpapers. They work on the G1 with CM 5.0.7. They don't come installed by default but you can download them from the market. And even thogh you're rooted if you want to go to the new CM you'll need to flash the SPL. This is due to the memory size of the G1.

I currently have the droid and was debating on upgrading to the incredible in july. However I was told that because of 2.2 coming out in June (allegedly) the droid will get the update to 2.2 much sooner then the incredible due to the fact that the incredible use's HTC's sense interface instead of the android interface, thus possibly causing problems once the update comes out.

Gameloft just released a bunch of awesome games for Android. You need Android 2.1+ to run them. They aren't available on the Market, you need to buy them straight from Gameloft.

Go to www.gameloft.com on your phone to check them out or buy them.

buyer beware not all the games are fully working on Android Devices. Mostly the FPS's aren't working.
