for those of you who think this is fake or a weird trick, it really is real. When professionally done this machine is called a "BGA rework station"...it's basically an oven as well, except there is actually a method to heating the solder, letting it rest at a temperature for a period of time, super heating it, then letting it cool. The oven trick is the "poor man's rework station"

this is the same concept to the XboX towel trick - where you let the xbox get so hot by wrapping it in a towel that it basically creates its own oven and re-melts the solder

chances are your MBP got heat warped and the solder connection snapped...the oven just rebridged the connection like you said

good work fixing it yourself man

So did I, reminded me of the time the varsity CC runners told some freshman girl to put her shoes in the oven to break them in. One $150 pair of shoes and a rubber-covered oven later, she found out it didn't work.

I've also seen people wrap a motherboard in tin foil (to prevent shit from melting), then cut out around the cpu and use a heat gun to heat it up. Then plop a piece of solder on a piece of tin foil on the cpu so when it melts, you know its heated up enough. That or just get an infrared temp gun.

well I think the right way would be to take the laptop apart, remove the thermal paste and reapply new. heat with heat gun (on the paste) and then reattach chip/processor to heatsink/etc

Came here to say I just used a heat gun on my brothers ps3 to fix the yellow light of death (like rrod on xbox's).

I figured if i couldnt find my heat gun id bake up, but was worried about other components melting. Anyway all i did was heat the motherboard generously on low heat for about a minute or two. Let it sit and cool for 20 minutes and applied new thermal compound, put it back together and it works.

I actually tried new thermal compound alone a couple weeks ago because i thought the heat method was bs, but that didnt work so i figured i'll have to heat it.

Anyway, I might try this on a dead tablet pc i have laying around, as the cpu is soldered on. I'll be shitting bricks if that works.

This reminds me of how "gg money" in console was like the fix-all for everything back in the day.

Then we get a call from the repair guys saying that the repair is free, 'cause apparently Apple was doing that.

So I guess the moral of the story is that you didn't need to put your MBP in the oven, because I swear to god Apple is replacing the logic board for free if you've got graphics problems.

Just did this for a laptop as well that had a charging issue. The solder leads for the charging port had been compromised. Stuck it in the oven and voila the battery charges again. It was my girlfriends laptop and she had bought a new battery, had several new chargers sent out by dell, and troubleshooted with dell for hours. Crazy how a simple bake fixed it up.

    Thanks for this thread!
