High End Resorts in North America/Central America/Carribbean

I am planning a week for my wife and I without the kids. Our timing is in Oct/Nov of 2011.

Some background - two of our three kids are special needs and in the past 14.5 years we've only ever been away from the kids a grand total of three nights. needless to say we need to work on us for a while.

The youngest is now 8.5 years old and the oldest is 14.5. They're both at a point where we can leave them with our family without a lot of concerns.

We're at a point where we can afford to do something really nice for ourselves as a couple. I am thinking our budget is in the $1000 a day range for lodging, food, sightseeing/spa/golf. Airfare is outside this $1000 a day. We'll probably do five or six nights away.

Given the kids situation we need to go somewhere that we can get back to AZ within a half day or less by air. That really takes anything outside of the areas in the title out of consideration.

Obviously we'd like to do an adults only resort this time out.

I have a lot of ideas but am looking for more input. What are your ideas?

What are your hobbies and interests? Climate likes/dislikes?

Good for you for raising your kids. That can't be easy on any level.

    Thanks, man.

Here is the list of stuff we like or suspect we'd like to try:

    -Helicopter rides
-maybe some biking (we're both out of shape a bit but working on it)
    -boating/fishing
-sitting on the beach is big for both of us
-drinking - a lot of drinking (we never get to do that but when we do we do it in style)
-gambling (I don't care for it much but she loves it)
-Cigars (for me, while she gambles)
-cars (I am into cars a LOT)
-spa (me massage - she all of it)
-I could be convinced to do some shallow diving (shes more likely to be into it than I)
-No heights - I freak out - she made us all go up the side of a mountain in a cable car in CO and I turned white and it took me 15 minutes to calm down once we got to top - sick to stomach, etc.

I reality, if we did six nights we'd be happy sitting on the beach four full days doing nothing but drinking, screwing (back in the room) and spa-ing. We can find something to do the other day or two pretty much anywhere.

For us I think the most important thing is to be at a world class resort with the highest service levels known to man. We could just stay there and lay on the beach and only leave the resort once or twice to have a memorable experience or two as a couple.

We've been to Hawaii (for our Honeymoon in 1994) and would prefer to see something else this time out....Cali is off the list as we go there a lot as a family. And, in Oct i suspect we need to go south to get good heat and warmer waters.

I am thinking of places like Aruba, Barbados, martinuque, Acupulco?, cabo, etc.

I am only interested in all inclusive if it is just plain top notch food and drink.

Because we're going to want to do adult only I also want to be sure we're not at some weird swapping place. While it seems cool on paper (maybe) i just don't want anything to do with it when we're trying to work on us and enjoy each others company.

Well I'm getting married in 7 days, we planned a trip to Fiji for the honeymoon. 1 week on Castaway Island, which is only like a mile long island west of Fiji's mainland. We figured we would chill for a week, do some water sports and what not, read, uh... maybe another activity...

Then for the 2nd week, we go to the main island to the Intercontinental where we plan on taking some rafting and kayaking tours through the waterfalls and gorges on the main island. Maybe some golf, definitely get a massage at the spa....

If you want, I can tell you how it is when we get back, which will be October 14th...

congrats Betawulf. Yes, I'd be interested in hearing all about it. We wanted to go to Fiji for our honeymoon and couldn't swing it. other than the distance concern we could swing it now.

If you're willing to go down to Mexico you could try a Club Med in Cancun or something. There'll be a lot of friendly adults and activities planned out for you so you don't have to think too far ahead planning everything out on your trip.

I think you've got a great list to start with though and it seems like you'll be able to keep yourself busy for more than long enough to get in a good vacation. Cheers to finally having the time to get away and refresh yourselves

You should look into some winter destinations...I would go with Park City. I once stayed at one of the suites at the Stein Erikson Lodge and did some heli-skiing. Overcome your fears!

You won't be all bundled up all the time either, they have a killer spa.

Alright, I am back, and I am married!

So, my travel agent called and Castaway Island (3.5 star resort) was oversold, they apologized for the inconvenience and put me in a 5 star resort on a Fiji island called LikuLiku. This place was the best place I could have imagined for a honeymoon. It was an adult only resort, so no screaming kids, plus there were very few guests and huts (bures they call them) and a lot of beach. We never felt crowded, there was always a LOT of beach between us and anyone else. The pool was small, but who cares, the ocean is right there. Also, if you like snorkelling, the resort gives everyone free snorkel gear as a part of your stay, since the surrounding ocean is immediately filled with croal and fish. They also had free kayaking and sailing on Hobie cats. We had the most relaxing secluded trip here, it was amazing.

They had paid excursions as well. The new wife and I took a "Private Picnic". They basically took us on a boat to a sand bar in the middle of the ocean, dropped us off with a basket of food and some umbrellas, and left us alone for 2 hours.

The second place we went to was the Intercontinental. A very different place after LikuLiku. This was a much larger resort, with kids. There was an adults only pool, but no one enforced that rule. Still, we were in Fiji, our room was really great, and the beach at this resort also had some surf, so I took a surfing lesson. There was also Horseback riding on the beach, and a golf course designed by Vijay Singh.

All in all, I would definitely recommend both places, although LikuLiku was the winner here...

    Hope this helps!

I have a timeshare that I use to travel internationally and domestically. f you plan on doing family trips, its a nice thing to have if it fits your budget. It took me 5 years to pay mine off, but now I only have quarterly maintenance dues of 85.00. The only downside is that you have to book in full week increments, but the places are usually pretty nice and you only have to pay airfare to get there.

I have visited St Maarten, Puerto Rico (twice), Grand Cayman, and Bahamas. The places are all 2 or three bedroom condos with full kitchens on nice properties right on a beach of your choice.

I am getting ready to head back to St Maarten on the 4th of November for 8 days ... I can't wait.

@Jazz_Man - Nah, the boat that dropped us off was watching from afar while we were on the island... So while we were alone, we weren't *really*

Have you thought about a cruise? The expeditions they plan can have all sorts of variations. If you are into the wilderness and hiking I would say to an Alaskan cruise. If you are into the beaches and what not do a western carribean cruise. More into the excitement and the partying, do a western carribean cruise.
