    Looking for a Laptop

I'm currently in the market for a new laptop and haven't followed CES very much this year. I'm looking to get something with at least an i5 processor and 500+ hdd space. The resolution can't be that low 1366x768 I just can't handle it. I'd like a 15 inch monitor as well as decent battery life.

Everything I have looked at had a 5400 rpm hard drive, is this the norm? Is it changing anytime soon? I'd rather not pay for an SSD but can I switch that with another faster drive like a 10k?

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Post any questions here too. Thanks!

Also, Any other things that I shouldn't "upgrade" and I can add myself for cheaper would be great. I'd like to stay with something like Samsung, Lenovo, Dell, or Asus too but I can be open.

You didn't state your budget and purpose of use.

Entry level laptops all have 5200rpm or uncommonly 7200rpm hard drives. Faster speed means increased heat and less battery life both of which are impractical to portable computers. There are no other speeds as SSD is the next logical upgrade. SSDs don't normally come standard unless you're purchasing an ultrabook or have upgradeable options. SSDs are extremely worth it and I would invest in one at time of sale or do an aftermarket upgrade (as long as you know it is compatible).

The fact that you want a higher screen res than 1366x768 is actually a higher premium than a SSD upgrade. This rules out most budget laptops as well as most mid-range mainstream notebooks. Expect to dough out over $700? I would estimate just for a nicer screen.

I'm assuming you'll be getting a PC so at this point you'll be investing in Windows 8, although not a problem, is just something to remember.

So what to look for is probably:
    • Premium ultrabooks like the Asus Zenbook/Samsung Series 9/HP Envy 14 come with amazing stock screens.
    • Performance Machine (any upgraded config your own machine through HP, Dell, etc)
    • Avoid Touchscreens? I haven't played with any of them.

For cheap value I'd try to play with a Toshiba U845 ultraportable in stores if possible:

Thanks for the fast response ME. My budget would be between 6-900 and I wil mainly use it for photo editing, office, movie streaming/viewing, and basic "normal" use. I more wanted to stay away from SSD due to lack of space, have you found the 5400 rpm ones to be slow on a laptop?

The resolution however has always bothered me. I just hate things feeling like they're cluttered on my desktop. I'm surprised that this is still the norm for resolution in laptops, but I can see what you're saying.

Windows 8 I was iffy on (and still am) but not too much is left with windows 7 still on it. Have you used it? How do you like it?

I've always been a desktop gamer so this is a weird purchase for me. I'm trying to look without going overboard but the gamer in me keeps wanting to upgrade everything lol

    Thanks for the help already

That's a little over your price point, but still close.

You can also check out HP's website right now. You can configure an HP Envy with i7 quad, 8gb ram, 750gb, and higher res screen in your price range.

I would say buy straight from the manufacturer, you get a better deal on the warranty and in most cases a better computer. Not one that has been shipped all over into a retail store. I used to manage a retail store, you would believe what used to happen to laptops in a retail setting..

Amazon is probably a better bet. Pricing is usually a bit better.

Thanks for the advice. I think I have a better idea now, just have to wait for sales.

The problem I've already noticed with SSD is that you need a bigger hard drive than you probably realize. Gotta go 256+ or bust. Just installing the stats packages and datasets that I use I'm already over 100gb. If I put on anything like vacation pictures I'd already be over.

I like it for mainstream gaming. One of the best bang for the buck gaming models.

The Y580 is model that gets refreshed yearly so just be sure you're reading updated reviews.

I just picked up my new laptop and 1920x1080 makes a HUGE difference. So glad I paid more for the better screen.
