Attn: People who belong to a gun club/have a shooting range membership

I just bought my first firearm (Sig p226 9mm).

But, with all the assault rifle ban bullshit going on, the shooting ranges near me charge an arm and a leg for ammo and raised their prices for using their facilities too.

What I want to do is get a membership to a shooting range/join a gun club (Idk if these terms are interchangeable) to help lower costs.

So, if you do go to the range often enough that you have a membership, how much do you pay/month?

Also, do outdoor shooting ranges typically cost more/month?

    Because I love shooting my dad's .30-06, .3030, etc.

I got a 3 month membership when I purchased my gun and I went pretty often because range time was free. Since I shoot a .45, ammo got expensive even without the range fees and i stopped going as often because of current cost. With me only having one gun, I wouldn't drop money on a membership. If I had access to 3+ guns, I'd find it justifiable.

My local range is indoor. Haven't been to an outdoor range so can't comment on that.

Everything is batshit crazy right now. If you can just chill and ride it out for a few more months, things should level off.

Went to the range today and shot 100 rounds of my precious .22.

I don't think this info will really help you, but:

I've belonged to a few clubs. Prices are usually the same around me. About $150 to sign up, plus around $150 a year. None of the clubs around me even sell ammo though. We have to bring our own, we just get access to their facilities. The club I'm a member of now has a trap range, 5-stand range, 50 ft indoor, 200 yard outdoor, 100 yard outdoor, outdoor 3d archery range, and indoor archery. But other than using the facility, you still gotta bring your own ammo.

And it's worth it for me, or else I'd have nowhere to shoot. There aren't really any public places to shoot. Most places require a membership. And the clubs usually do some pretty cool stuff like fishing tournaments, hunting trips, etc.

Ever been to Island Lake? It's a bit of a drive for you and me but a lot of fun, and relatively cheap. Me and my buddy go regularly to shoot his AR-15

Damn, from looking at their site, Island Lake looks nice.

And it's right by Kensington Park, which I love going to in the summer.

I could go to the range, then disc or do some biking at the park and spend the whole day out there haha.

Do they sell ammo there too?

The only problem is it's 45 minutes away from me and the membership doesn't save me any money until I got about 18x.

So, gas might be kind of a bitch.

Me and a couple friends do want to go skeet shooting this summer too.

    Thanks for the suggestion man!

    $140 a year

Skeet, archery, 3d archery, camping, fishing, pistol, rifle range. Have to donate 1 weekend a year to help out. No range officer needed, just show up and shoot at your leisure

    Lucky bastard.

I hope to go to grad school / live out west one of these days, maybe in CO.

I'd love to be able to walk out back and shoot some targets before lunch haha

I haven't taken my mountain bike there yet, but I bike the road around the lake some times.

I usually go to Stoney Creek Park because it's closer to me, but I love Kensington.

    How are the trails there?

Stoney is better IMO but Kensington is "easier" climb wise. Pontiac lake is where it's at though.

Yeah, I've heard Pontiac Lake is awesome.

Hopefully I'll check it out this year.

My friend kept bailing on me when we planned to go last year.

Personally I hate paying for ranges. I do like that they're nice but I hate paying all the fees. Most of them require that you have to use their ammo. And they have pretty strict rules like you can only use their ear protection, and eye protection. I get where they are coming from because they want to make more money and insurance reasons, but I'd rather drive a little farther and go to the desert and just set up my own targets. That way I can shoot my own style and shoot however I want.

+1 for personal choice on shooting style and targets over range rules.

Local range near me has outdoor and indoor, pistol and rifle, archery, skeet. $60 per year. Bring your own ammo. Not a member, family farm is 3 min away

Is it legal to shoot at the farm?

Why wouldn't it be? Private property, outside city limits.

EDIT: seriously though, it's legal. County has no restrictions on discharge of firearm, like towns do. I can literally do pretty much whatever I want. And there's no reason why it shouldn't be that way, out in the country, no neighbors, etc.

Since you would have to bring your own ammo, I would just shoot at the farm. I know some ranges offer discounted ammo, but you'd have to do the math to figure out how often and how long to get the saving.
