    Looking to purchase a shotgun

Looking for something that'll be for home defense and possibly want to try out skeet shooting with it. I will not be doing any hunting. I'd imagine a home defense pump won't do well shooting clays but it'll be just for fun, not for a competition. I'm trying to stay under $500. Is the Mossberg 500 and Remington 870 gonna be my best bet? Lots of debates online about which is better, just gonna hold both and see what I like better. I've read some decent reviews on the Binelli Supernova but its right at the top of my budget. Anybody have any input?

though at that pricepoint i would say it really does stay between the Mossy and the Remy

I have 2 Remington 870s. one is a short, heavy barrel that I use for home defense and the other is a long barrel that I use for skeet shooting. I like the 870, I don't have any experience with Mossberg but I figure price and then preference would influence your decision. My friend owned the gun store I bought mine at so the short barrel only cost me $250 but it was marked around $450, iirc.

It's a fun shotgun to shoot with. Not too much recoil but after about 15 round in trap I can feel it in my shoulder and once I get to 25 rounds I usually end up with a small bruise. Shooting slugs is dope as fuck as well but be ready for a big kick back. I think 7 slugs was the most I have shot in one sitting before I had to stop because of my shoulder. There's also a shit ton of accessories that you can outfit it with. I like it.

I've used the short barrel for trap and 5 stand and it sucks. You have to stand really close to the launcher for trap and you'll probably hit about 20% of your targets in 5. Never tried it with skeet. My suggestion would be to buy the 870 and see if you can get it with the short and long barrel. That way when its in your house you have the short barrel attached and when you want to go skeet shooting you attach the long barrel.

If you can't do that just yet then get the short barrel and go on websites like www.cheaperthandirt.com to see if they are selling the longer barrel, my friend bought one from there for about $106.

Hard to go wrong between a Mossberg 500 and a Remington 870. Your biggest differences are the safety location (on top for the 500, crossbar on the trigger guard for the 870) and the pump release (behind the trigger on the thumb side for the 500, in front of the trigger on the finger side for the 870). Quality between the two is the same, both have dual action arms for movie style one hand pumping, both are barrel changeable. You won't go wrong with either one, just get your hands on both so you can figure out which safety style really works for you best.

DJ hit all the points. At the same time i bought my 500 my friend bought his 870, and having shot them both at the same time, there isn't much difference. I actually like where the safety is on my mossberg. It is more noticeable, and quite literally in your face.

in that price range you're not going to be able to find anything other than pump, even used (most likely), and i wouldn't trust any semi or over/unders you'd find in that price range.

Checking in late, but I have a mossy 500 SPX. Would purchase an 870.

    Both beautiful creatures.

I really like my 500. I changed out the safety to a metal one: http://www.brownells.com/shotgun-par...prod27426.aspx and like it much better.

Either one has TONS of aftermarket shit available and you can literally turn either from a home defense gun, to a clay gun, to a deer slug gun with pretty much no gunsmithing involved.

My shop sells brand new 870 tacticals for $379.99 . That's 7 rounds of 'GTFO'

Love 870's, but as a lefty that safety drives me crazy. Wish all shotty's had a tang safety.

Deciding on the 590a1 mossy with the tri-rail so I can mount a light later on. I'm a lefty and the safety was way more comfortable. Difference between the 500 and 590 was the metal trigger assembly, correct? Also, the blackwater is the one I liked most. Has night sights on the front and the extra ammo holding on the stock. Is the blackwater just some "edition" type deal or what? Dude at the local gun range was super cool with helping me out.

As everyone has stated the moss and remi are awesome. I have two 870's and one moss. All are great guns and very reliable.

For a semi auto under $500 I have to agree with Cowboy there are options. I sold eight or nine Hassan Optima's this year and everyone has really enjoyed them. Not sure on the availability in the US but I've shot one a few times and it was a blast. The price in Canada is $349 plus taxes.

I have a mossberg 900 semi-auto set up for bird hunting - not sure how much you could do to convert it to a tactical / home defense weapon but I'd be interested in getting rid of it for $350-$500
