I have an offroad permit to take my truck out on Assateague Island. I love it out there. For one thing, it's quite empty compared to Ocean City. The surf is way better and there are no restricted surfing areas. You can also fish, kayak, drink beer and have a bonfire. None of that shit is legal in town. We have 18 miles of open sand to drive on plus a couple trails along the backside of the island.

It's all beaches and sand. Gotta drop your tires to 20psi before heading out. They keep a row of built in air compressors to refill on your way off the beach. Oh and it's open 24/7. I've been out there for all-nighters and its a blast.

well, up until wednesday my girlfriend had a honda fit and i have my toyota solara. the fit has been totaled so we need to get her a daily. We were originally looking at some full size trucks so I can tow some of the boats for scouts, and have some utility or even the option for a fifth wheeler later.

With the current turn of events we were talking about getting her a basic YJ through JK Jeep or maybe smaller pickup, and then seeing what our budget is for a big boy toy for me.

Just at least get a real offroading vehicle. I cringe whenever I see some yuppie in their 4-wheel drive Mecedes SUV out on the beach.

I'm putting new shock on my truck this Fall. The old ones are really blown out from all the beach driving. Ground clearance is important too. My old Ford Explorer would drag the undercarriage through the sand if we were in someone else's wheel ruts. Really put some wear and tear on the vehicle.

Yeah, we also have a GMC Envoy, but that's the wife's car. I'm sure it'd handle the beach just fine, but I don't feel the need to abuse it on the sand.

Regular cab Taco 4WD with mild lift and oversize tires is legit as fuck for trails/offroad/NOT rock crawling

Yeah, my trucks wheelbase sucks. I can barely park it at the grocery store without having to backup halfway and straighten out. Finding a spot to parallel park blows too. I almost never drive it unless I'm offroading or need to haul something. I ride the motorcycle all summer and drive either my Corolla or Camry all winter.

she just needs a daily driver. so cheap to insure, safe, economical.

the quandary is what is going to work for the overall goal of us being able to camp and off road.

Been thinking about getting a beefy (diesel 1/2 ton merhaps?) truck and going camper top for now, and then having a jeep to actually do some "crawling" in

jeep is none of these things.

tacoma makes more sense in all ways other than legit rock crawling

those were our original parameters for her to have a daily, but then the idea of not getting another sub-compact came to me

i hate teasing myself so i haven't really started looking. we should be getting the settlement for the totaled car next week, and then the rest of the money for this a week or two after that. i was just curious if any people here had any experience withcasual off roading and could lead me towards what i should be looking for

used 4Runner - very capable for everything but crawling and they make SUV tents that hook on to the vehicle. Jeep for crawling. Boom solved
